Title: The Vision Within: Social and Personality Factors that Enhance Creativity
Speaker: Darya Zabelina, Northwestern University
Abstract: Creativity is a critical yet understudied component of effective human functioning. The creativity of scientists and artisans alike is an important element in the development and advancement of new ideas. Yet, a scientific understanding of what creativity is and what promotes it lag behind its applications considerably. The present program of research reveals social manipulations that facilitate various aspects of creativity. For example, thinking of oneself as a child produces more original responses, particularly among more introverted individuals. Furthermore, experiencing self-compassion facilitates creative originality among self-judgmental individuals. And finally, mindfulness manipulation results in higher levels of creative elaboration, particularly among neurotic persons. The present research and framework provide a unique window into the creative mind.
